Welcome to Needless to Say.

This newsletter asks one crucial question: Why enjoy your favorite movie, show, or song when you can over-analyze it instead? By subscribing, you’ll get full access to my mindless musings. There’s always something to talk about, and nearly all of it is needless to say. Am I marketing this well?

It’s free, I promise.

Every post is available for free to everyone; just hit subscribe and you’ll get a fresh-baked newsletter hand-delivered to your inbox on intermittent Thursdays (approximately once a month).

Or don’t subscribe, refresh this page on intermittent Thursdays (approximately once a month), and you should be fine.

Where should I start?

I’ll raise you one better: where do you want to start?

If you’re into movies, here’s a post about how genre is dead but maybe that’s a good thing:

Or, if TV is more your speed, here are some thoughts on how House of the Dragon’s much-maligned second season may have been an under-appreciated gem:

But maybe you’re just here for the music! In that case, when was the last time you took a moment to truly appreciate your favorite song’s second verse?

Or, if you really want to plunge head-first into the NTS canon, check out the longest post to date: a deep-dive into the cadences in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Phantom of the Opera (it’s more fun than it sounds).

Needless to say, there’s a lot more where that came from. I try to semi-rotate among discussing music, TV, and Film. Why, sometimes I even talk about music in film and TV!

Wait a minute. Who are you?

Oh yeah. Hi, I’m Caleb. I’m 24 years old and I like movies, music, and Oxford commas.

An extremely handsome man (me) stands in front of a rock formation in Sedona, Arizona
This is Caleb. You’re about to hear a lot of his thoughts on a lot of things.

In terms of qualifying experience, I…like to create stuff. I’m certainly not a professional, but I have written multiple screenplays, several short film scores, and an album of original music. All for fun, but if you’re interested in seeing any of my work, feel free to reach out and ask.

I studied both music and screenwriting in college, so I have a solid academic background in understanding and discussing creative works. (I also have a major in astrophysics, so there’s always a chance that this newsletter might veer into a discussion of Lagrangians or stellar dynamics. Who’s to say?)

I’m convinced. Where do I sign up?
